ARTIST RESIDENCIES
SPACE STUDIO offers seven spacious artist studios, including one dedicated to printmaking. Each year, we host three to four group residencies, for which artists from around the country are invited to apply. Thematic residencies offer space for artists to push the boundaries of artistic mediums, while independent residencies are crafted for individual needs. Our programming includes mentorship sessions with artists and curators, site visits, inspirational trips, workshops, talks and masterclasses. Each residency ends with an Open Studio where audiences are invited to engage with the art and learn more about the artists and their processes.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and nationwide lockdown, the residency is taking place through virtual studio visits and online portfolio review sessions, and has been extended to December 2020. The artists are being mentored by Veeranganakumari Solanki, and have also been provided with a grant to support their research and creative practice.

Sculpture Residency
The eight artists of the Sculpture Residency were encouraged to explore a variety of mediums to push the boundaries of their sculptural practice: print-making, drawing, textile and painting, to name a few. SPACE STUDIO organised studio visits and talks with Dhruva Mistry, Sudarshan Shetty and N.S. Harsha. The artists were mentored by curator Veerangakumari Solanki, and artist Shubigi Rao visited the residency in collaboration with the Kochi-Muziris Biennale Foundation. SPACE STUDIO also organised a two day trip for the residency artists to Mumbai for the Mumbai Gallery Weekend, where they had a chance to attend talks and gallery walk-throughs, and engage with members of the art community.

Art and Ecology
Through the medium of printmaking, the artists in this residency explored the themes of art and ecology. SPACE STUDIO organised a day trip to Ahmedabad, where the artists visited the Calico Textile Museum and the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Museum. They also visited the forests and natural reserves near Jambughoda with naturalist, wildlife conservationist and photographer, Vishal Thakur. Vishal taught them how to read the forest and animal paths in the region and spoke about his specialisation in human-wildlife conflict mitigation. A masterclass and workshop by Shaleen Wadhwana helped the artists in structuring their portfolios and presenting their work.

City and its Architecture
The inaugural residency of SPACE STUDIO’s new Alembic Museum Square location was a response to the industrial environment of the new studio, as well as to the city of Baroda itself. The residents visited the UNESCO Heritage site in Champaner for a research trip, and were mentored by artist Vasudevan Akittam and curator Veeranganakumari Solanki. Roobina Karode from the Kiran Nadar Museum of Arts in New Delhi also visited the studio during the residency to offer her guidance to the artists.
